This problem was something that NASA needed to stop before it started. They had to devise a method of exercise in space that ensures to combat that kind of rapid decay in completely healthy astronauts. 

After all we cannot pay millions of dollars in schooling, training and physical optimization for space travelers and then have them land on Mars re-entering a gravity where they are the equivalent of weak elderly patients hobbling about. One fall and a broken hip and your billions in space research is for nothing.

So in a nutshell here is what we have learned about these core essential truths regarding the health and usefulness of our bodies as we age.

Activity matters. Load bearing resistance exercise throughout the full arc of a muscles movement is the most efficient way to cause positive, safe stress to muscles.

When you commit to this activity even three or four times a week, you are giving your body information. You are programming it that this stress is coming routinely at intervals and that it should be prepared for it. Health has a rhythm to it.

The same is true for load bearing exercise for the bones. Your bones appreciate resistance when you lift weights. The compression and torque of exercise informs your bones similarly and they respond by increasing their production. Yet what does production mean in your bones?

It’s not just more calcium and stronger bones.

Our bones secrete a protein called osteocalcin, discovered in the 1970s, that rebuilds the skeleton. In 2007,  a study proved that this protein acts as a hormone to keep blood sugar levels in check and burn fat.

So this slides back to the astronauts again. If you are NASA and you have these multimillion dollar brain athletes in space… how do you keep them healthy.

NASA proved that you can not only optimally keep a person in health but it is ideal and preferred if you do it in short bursts just a few times a week. That’s right. Not only is jogging five miles a day 7 days a week not fun, it’s not necessary or ideal.
